CONSTRUCTION, MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT BY FIRMS, INDUSTRIES AND PROJECTS
Construction of the Australian Built Environment 2007-2019
Output and employment in 16 Industries that construct, manage and maintain the Australian built environment. Using data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics annual publication Australian Industry, the report provides industry comparisons and discusses the economic role of the built environment sector in the global financial crisis 2008-2012 and during the macroeconomic transition after the end of the mining boom in 2014.
Construction and maintenance of the built environment is around 15 percent of GDP and 17 percent of employment in Australia, but only half is due to on-site work by contractors and subcontractors. The capability and organisation of construction and those related built environment industries in professional services, property development and management, utilities and manufacturing is a foundation for economic and social development. The cost of buildings and structures is an important determinant of investment and economic growth, and their performance an important determinant of the sustainability and quality of life in an urbanising world.
